As a mom, you are constantly juggling multiple tasks and responsibilities. Add to that the never-ending messes that seem to pile up, and it’s no wonder you feel overwhelmed.
But there is hope, mama!
Decluttering doesn’t have to be a daunting task anymore.
Here are five tips to help you get started and move past the overwhelm!
1. Set realistic goals.
Slow and steady wins the race. Don’t try to do too much at once or you’ll end up feeling even more overwhelmed.
Start small and focus on one area at a time.
If you need a quick win- start with something very easy like the utensil drawer or the bathroom.
A quick decluttering win is something that can be decluttered in 15 mins or less.
This quick win will give you the confidence and the motivation to move to bigger projects later down the road.
2. Get your family on board.
If your family is not already onboard, now is the time to have that discussion.
Enlist the help of your spouse and kids to help declutter your home. This will help alleviate some of that stress and overwhelm that comes with trying to do it all yourself.
Not only will this make the process go more quickly, but it will also teach your kids important life lessons in responsibility and general care, and mindfulness of what they bring into their lives.
3. Find a decluttering method that works for you.
There are so many different techniques and methods when it comes to decluttering your home.
Think about which method you might prefer, or try all of them! You can start decluttering by going room by room, by category (clothes/shoes/linens/pots and pans, etc), or even by time (5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, etc).
4. Create a plan of action.
Now that you’ve decided what decluttering method works best for you, make a plan of how/when you’re going to declutter it. This will help keep you organized and on track.
Find a system that works for you and your family this can include a daily schedule of to-dos, a monthly calendar, decluttering checklist, or a family sharing app so that family members can stay in the loop.
5. Schedule some “me” time.
It’s important to take a break from the decluttering process every once in a while. Make sure to schedule some time for yourself to relax and do something you enjoy.
This will help you avoid burnout and keep your energy levels up.
Examples of “Me time”:
Physical:
- A bath with bubbles or fizzies.
- Try aromatherapy with essential oils and a diffuser.
- Lace-up and go for a run jog, or walk.
Just get started
The absolute hardest part of decluttering your home is getting started.
But once you take that first step, and see the results of your work-the rest will be much easier. If you follow these tips, I believe you’ll be on your way to a decluttered home in no time!
