Let’s face it: no one likes doing laundry.
It’s a chore that doesn’t feel like it’s getting any easier, and the more time we spend on it, the more time we have to think about how many loads are left in the hamper.
But there’s one thing that can make doing laundry a little bit easier: Getting your clothes to smell AMAZINGLY good!
I’ve struggled getting my laundry to smell good once its out of the dryer and onto my skin.
But, with these tips I have definitely figured out how to master that amazing laundry smell that LASTS!
So how do you make your laundry smell good? Here are the ways I make my laundry smell awesome and keep them extra clean!
What I use in our washer and dryer:
After testing a bunch different laundry detergent/ dryer sheet combos, this is now my favorite combination! it really lasts for days!
- Seventh Generation lavender laundry detergent
- Downey fabric beads
- Seventh Generation lavender dryer sheets
Tips to make your laundry get cleaned and smell AMAZING!
1. Use baking soda.
- Add baking soda to the wash cycle.
- Add baking soda to the fabric softener cycle, if your machine has one (but again, don’t overdo it).
- If you have a top-load washing machine that doesn’t have an internal dispenser for adding liquid fabric softener during its run cycle, try placing a dryer sheet in with your clothes; they’ll get saturated with no extra work on your part!
2. Vinegar can help eliminate odors.
Did you know that vinegar can help eliminate odors?
Vinegar is a natural cleaner that can be used to clean your washing machine, dishwasher and even the fabric softener dispenser!
3. Hang your clothes outside to dry.
Dryers can remove a lot of the moisture from your laundry, which makes it feel soft and fluffy.
But they also trap in allergens and bacteria that cause that musty smell when you’re wearing clean clothes.
If you want to get rid of this stink and keep your family safe from allergies and illnesses like mold-related illnesses, hang your laundry up outside instead!
You don’t even need an outdoor clothesline—just use whatever you have available:
- A clothing drying rack.
- A chair with some string tied between two nails (or two chairs, if needed).
- Air circulation is important for drying (use a fan if needed).
- Get as creative as you need to.
If hanging isn’t an option because it’s too cold or rainy outside, use another method like using fabric softener sheets in place of detergent in the washer cycle or washing all whites together on warm setting without any bleach added (make sure they rinse really well though).
4. Air out your washing machine.
It’s easy to forget that your washing machine is a closed space! It contains all the odors from your laundry, so you’ll want to make sure to air out your machine after each use. Here are some ways you can do that:
- Open the door and let it sit open for 30 minutes.
- If you want, place an oscillating fan near the washer and turn it on for about 10 minutes. This will blow out any lingering smells from inside of the washer.
5. Keep your clothes in clean hampers.
If you want your clothes to smell good, you must keep them in a clean hamper.
- Keep the hamper away from the washing machine and dryer. They can both get really hot, which might ruin your clothes.
- Keep the hamper away from any furnace or air conditioner vents. These are another place where things are likely to get hot and cause damage to your clothing (and not in a good way).
6. Sanitize your washer.
If you use bleach or vinegar in the washer, be sure to run an empty load with detergent after to remove any residue that might be left behind.
Another option is to add a cup of white vinegar directly into the washing machine water before adding in your clothes. This will kill bacteria and leave your laundry smelling fresh!
You can also try these to sanitize your washing machine.
7. Pre-treat stains before putting in the laundry machine.
- Pour fragrance-free laundry detergent or vinegar directly on the stain to pre-treat it before putting in the laundry machine. Vinegar can be used as an effective pre-treater for stains, especially those that have been set by heat and moisture. It’s also great at neutralizing odors.
- Clean your washing machine regularly with a product designed to clean out dirt and oils that build up inside of it over time (i.e., vinegar). Washing machines can get pretty gross if you don’t clean them regularly, so you’ll want to keep them looking shiny and new!
8. Cold wash clothes.
3. Always wash on cold (unless otherwise directed by the manufacturer).
Hot water can cause dyes to bleed out of fabrics and onto other clothing items in the load.
It can also shrink certain types of fabrics if they aren’t pre-washed before being used for the first time (like jeans).
9. Add essential oil to your wash cycle—
If you are into a more natural way of living then adding essential oil to your wash routine is a great detergent booster.
- Essential oils are great for sensitive skin. If you or someone in your family has sensitive skin or allergies, adding essential oil to your wash cycle can help keep irritation at bay because they’re naturally anti-inflammatory agents with healing properties that make them safe even for people with sensitive skin or allergies
- Essential oils help keep stains from setting in. When you add a few drops of essential oil to your wash cycle, the natural antibacterial properties of the oil will reduce stains by breaking them down at their source.
- So how do you add them? It’s simple: just add five to eight drops of pure essential oil to the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine before you start the cycle.
I know that it can be hard to get the right balance—But once you master some of these tips. You’ll have your laundry AND your family smelling amazing in no time!
